About the Department

Frostburg is a Main Street Community located in Western Maryland (Allegany County) approximately 9 miles west of Cumberland on the “National Road” (Route 40), nestled it the state’s Appalachian highlands. Since 1875, the Frostburg Fire Department (FFD), a 100% volunteer staffed fire rescue department, has been committed to providing the highest level of services to our citizens and visitors.

We proudly serve a diverse population which includes protecting the students, staff, and faculty that attend and work at Frostburg State University. We also respond to incidents in the surrounding communities, assisting the neighboring fire rescue departments in the Mt. Savage, LaVale, Midland, Shaft and Eastern Garrett County areas.

The FFD is composed of two stations with a primary response area of approximately 10 square miles and a population of over 15,000. We currently operate four types of apparatus to handle emergency incidents: a heavy rescue squad, a ladder truck, two front-line engine companies, and two UTVs. The rescue squad primarily responds to motor vehicle collisions in the greater Frostburg area, including the 12 miles of busy Interstate 68 corridor (which connects Hancock, MD to Morgantown, WV), and also to structural fires to carry out search and rescue duties. The 105′ rear mount ladder truck with a 105′ foot, is dispatched to structure fires ranging from single story houses to garden-style apartments complexes to multi-story high-rises. The two Class A Engines respond on almost all calls to provide fire suppression.

Why Frostburg Fire Department?

The Frostburg Fire Department (FFD) is always looking for dedicated, hard working individuals (locals or students) as we constantly strive to build our membership to support our 100% VOLUNTEER staffing. Volunteering in the fire department is a unique experience that can be as rewarding and educational as you choose to make it. Motivation, dedication and professionalism are qualities that successful volunteers must possess.

Members of the FFD not only possess these qualities, but are continuously seeking to further their knowledge and skills as well. No previous experience is necessary, all training and equipment is provided as well as participation in the Length of Service Awards Program (LOSAP) and the Personnel Subtraction Modification Programs.

So, if you are 16 years of age or older and interested in becoming a member of a great organization and helping others in the community, stop by one of our stations, introduce yourself and ask for an application.
