The Good Will Volunteer Fire Company #1 is an independent, all-volunteer fire company serving the rural area of Lonaconing in Allegany County, Maryland. This region is a mountainous section of Western Maryland and Lonaconing is one of four communities located along the George’s Creek Valley, along the border with Garrett County to our west and 10 miles from Mineral County, West Virginia to our east.

Originally organized in April 1882, our department has grown along with the needs of our community. Our 56 volunteer firefighters operate one rescue-engine, one tanker, one quick attack, one utility truck, one command vehicle, and one off-road UTV out of one station. Our first due area is 70 square miles in size but sparsely populated with just over 2,000 residents. While our community may seem small to some, the fire service response needs are not. Our department responded to an average of 275 first-due calls. Due to our central location, we have agreements for automatic aid with eight neighboring departments which spans 170 square miles of area and an additional 16,019 residents. We also have extended mutual aid agreements with departments in Allegany and Garrett Counties in Maryland and Pennsylvania and West Virginia, covering a 730 square mile area.
